Learning from the Past on How to Integrate Risk Analysis, Mathematical Modelling and Explosibility/Calorimetry Analysis for Safer Plants

API 2021 will provide a forum on the most advanced techniques available for both the management of safety and the risk mitigation in process industries. Such techniques comprise both detailed mathematical modelling for the characterization of all the reasonably possible accidental scenarios (e.g., reactors explosion, fires, toxic compound dispersion, etc..) and statistical tools to carry out a quantitative risk assessment on the target plant, all linked to the most advanced explosibility and calorimetric techniques available to provide the necessary experimental data for the analysis.

Through the narrative of a series of “not so well-known” past accidents, the above-mentioned techniques will be presented and applied to both reconstruct the dynamics of the accidents and highlight the criticalities in the safety of those plants.

The workshop will be a unique opportunity to learn from past accidents how to correctly employ a series of advanced techniques able to evaluate both the magnitude and the probability of occurrence of possible accidental events. One of the most original features will be the deep integration among mathematical modelling, statistical tools, and explosibility/calorimetry analysis to perceive the increasing of safety in a process plant.

Talks will be delivered by both chemical engineers and chemists, who are leaders in the field, and will try to cover a wide range of accidental scenarios: from runaway reactions to both vapour and dust explosions.
